‘Euphoria’ star Chloe Cherry questions Sydney Sweeney’s OnlyFans storyline: “That’s where we’re at in society?”

Euphoria actor and former adult star Chloe Cherry has called out Sydney Sweeney‘s storyline in the third season of the HBO show, whereby her character Cassie begins an OnlyFans career.

Cherry, who formerly starred in a porn parody of the hit show before being cast in season two, said that Sweeney’s storyline felt “crazy as fuck” to her.

Speaking with Refinery, Cherry, who plays Faye, an ex-heroin addict and friend of Zendaya’s character, Rue, in the show, added that it didn’t make sense to her that “somebody living like Cassie turns to sex work. Like, holy shit.”

She added rhetorically, “That’s where we’re at in society?” Notably, Sweeney’s character is engaged to Jacob Elordi’s character, Nate, who refuses to pay $50,000 for floral arrangements for their upcoming ceremony.

As per the two episodes released so far, Cassie’s solution to raise the funds is to sell photos of herself online.

Writer and director Sam Levinson has faced much criticism for the direction of her character, after she went fully nude in the second episode in sexual photoshoots that included her dressing up like an “adult baby” and a dog.

With this in mind, Cherry continued, “OnlyFans and sex work have become more normalised, but it’s literally only because of capitalism and the economy getting worse.”

As such, adult content as a career choice becoming mainstream has “nothing to do with empowerment or power”.

Cherry added, “The economy is horrible, that’s why people are turning to it. I really think OnlyFans is like a crazy, weird phenomenon in the 2020s [that] we’ll look back on and be very confused by.”

Levinson has previously responded to claims that the theme of exploitation underpinning Sweeney’s character is oddly reminiscent of her real life, insisting, “It’s always about what’s best for the character. We always talk about the layers of irony in the show. I adore Sydney, and she’s so much fun to work with.”

Levinson then shared that Sweeney had a single request for her character when he was writing the third season: “Before I wrote this season, she called me, and she said, ‘Just do me one favor: Make sure Cassie’s crazy.’”
