Ethan Hawke walks back claim his new movie will be one of the greatest movies ever: “I don’t know why I said that”

Ethan Hawke has walked back his claim that his next movie with Richard Linklater will be considered “among the greatest movies ever made”.

The upcoming film will mark the tenth collaboration between Hawke and Linklater, following on from the Golden Globe-nominated Blue Moon, which arrived in 2025.

While information regarding the plot is thin on the ground for their next movie, it is believed to be centred on the transcendentalism movement in the 19th century.

During a recent appearance on Today, Hawke teased the upcoming film, “Everything’s been preparation for what’s to come,” before adding, “The tenth is going to be the best.”

Hyping it up even further, Hawke continued, “Personally, I have no doubt in saying it will be among the greatest films ever made.”

Now, the actor has admitted that he regrets his prior comments, but stressed that he still wholeheartedly believes in the project.

“I don’t know why I said that,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. Hawke elaborated, “I’m mad at myself. The problem with doing so many interviews is eventually you lose your mind. It’s like a guy who stayed at the party too long. You just talk too much.”

Hawke went on to say that “I’m very confident about this” film, and confirmed that they plan to begin shooting later this year. “It’ll be the heaviest lift of our lives, but we’re really ready,” he stressed.

During his Today interview, Hawke provided a tentative release timeline for the secret film, stating that he would return to the programme in around 18 months to promote the project. He also revealed that “we’ve been thinking about this movie since 1998” and Linklater has “been thinking about it longer than that”.

No further information has been revealed regarding the cast for Hawke and Linklater’s tenth film together.
