Eric Dane reveals ALS diagnosis

Euphoria actor Eric Dane has revealed that he has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease, otherwise known as ALS.

Dane made a statement to People on April 10th that said: “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

He added that he feels “fortunate” to be able to currently continue working, and that he is “looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” before concluding, “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

The actor, who is 52 years old, has been a stalwart of television drama since the 1990s, with high-profile roles in shows such as Charmed, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Last Ship. Since 2019, he has starred in the smash hit HBO drama Euphoria as the character of Cal Jacobs.

ALS is a rare disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spine. Over time, those affected gradually lose the ability to move and breathe, and they can also gradually lose the ability to speak.

With regards to Dane’s role in Euphoria, production for the much anticipated and long-awaited third season of the drama is set to commence next week on April 14th. The show, which stars Hollywood actors Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi, alongside a huge ensemble cast, follows a troubled group of high school students as they struggle to come to terms with their identities.

Lead actor Zendaya has previously won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her role as Rue Bennett on the show. However, the show’s future was uncertain for some years since the second series concluded in 2022. With its confirmed return set, Euphoria will be one of the most highly anticipated TV shows of the year.
