Epiphone release Kirk Hammett signature Flying V guitar
Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has teamed up with Epiphone to release a new signature guitar modelled on his 1979 Flying V axe.
The guitar is described as a “painstaking recreation” of Hammett’s prized original ’79 Flying V. The V-shaped guitar is now a classic model for the thrash metal subgenre championed by Hammett and his Metallica bandmate James Hetfield.
“I am extremely honoured to be able to put out an Epiphone Flying V today,” Hammett announced in a press release. “Epiphone represents great sounding guitars at accessible prices, which is fundamentally important for up-and-coming musicians. I’m beyond pleased that I can offer the ’79 Flying V in this capacity. It means so much to me to be able to put good guitars in the hands of young players.”
The new recreation features a solid mahogany body and a one-piece mahogany neck with volute, Grover Rotomatic machine heads with “spade” buttons, and a custom bridge.
Under the strings are two Gibson USA Calibrated T-Type humbucker pickups wired to CTS potentiometers and an Orange Drop capacitor. Below is a three-way pickup selector switch and a 1/4-inch output jack. The headstock is emblazoned with Hammett’s insignia, and the product comes with a black hardshell case.
Hammett has previously collaborated with Gibson on a replica model of his classic ‘Greeny’ 1959 Las Paul Standard.
The new Flying V model is currently available for $1,299 and is available in Ebony and Metallic Purple colour designs. See the guitar in action below.
