English Teacher share new track and announce debut album ‘This Could Be Texas’
Leeds indie rising stars English Teacher have released their most stirring single yet, ‘Albert Road’ and announced details of their debut album, This Could Be Texas.
The group have taken a more emotive turn on ‘Albert Road’. Featuring vocalist Lily Fontaine’s incisive lyrics commenting on British idiosyncrasies, a customarily powerful vocal performance, and artistic restraint from the rest of the band, it slowly builds to a shuddering climax. There’s more profoundness at play than in their other recent singles, such as ‘Mastermind Specialism’, which, is still mightily impressive.
Featuring sharp lines such as “Don’t take their prejudice to heart / We hate everyone / The world around us never showed / How loving can be fun,” and “And that’s why we are how we are”, the new track sketches a different side of English Teacher.
Fontaine explains: “I want this album to feel like you’ve gone to space and it turns out it’s almost identical to Doncaster. It’s about inbetweens, it’s about home, and it’s about Desire Paths.”
Discussing the motivations behind the band’s latest single, she continues: “When people ask where I’m from I usually say I’m mixed race: half Yorkshire, half Lancashire. It allows me to divert with comedy from the potential connotations of that question, which change wildly depending on who’s asking it. One end of Albert Road in Colne (her hometown) is cold, underfunded and uninspiring; the other is warm at night with live music. It sums up how I look back on the place I lived for 19 years.”
English Teacher’s debut album, This Could Be Texas, will arrive on April 12th via Island Records. To celebrate the record, the group has also announced their most extensive UK tour yet.
