En Vogue singer Dawn Robinson reveals she’s lived in her car for last three years

American pop singer Dawn Robinson, formerly a member of En Vogue, has revealed she’s been living in her car for the last three years.

The star rose to prominence in the 1990s, and the group enjoyed a string of hits, including their early single, ‘Hold On,’ which landed in second position on the Billboard Hot 100. ‘My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It), ‘Something He Can Feel,‘ and ‘Free Your Mind’ also landed within the top ten.

While the group are still active, Robinson, a founding member, initially left the group in 1997 before briefly returning in 2005 ahead of another spell in En Vogue between 2008 and 2011. She also released the solo album Dawn in 2002.

Now, in a new video uploaded to YouTube, Robinson has explained how her circumstances have changed, revealing to viewers, “You guys, for the past almost three years, I have been living in my car. I said it! Oh my God, it’s out.”

In 2020, she was living with her parents in Las Vegas which she said “was wonderful until it wasn’t”. She then planned to live with her co-manager in Los Angeles, but the plans fell through due to him not having sufficient room in his property. She then lived in a hotel for an eight-month period before having to live from her car.

Robinson reflected: “That first night was scary. But then, as I got to know what to do in my car and how to do it, like how to cover my windows and you don’t talk to certain people. You’re careful of telling people that you’re alone, as a woman especially, and I’m a celebrity — I don’t just divulge that to people. If you don’t know who I am, I’m not telling you that part.”

The singer isn’t seeking pity, stating that she has now adjusted to “car life” and has found a whole community of people who chose to live from their vehicles. “I felt free. I felt like I was on a camping trip,” she shared.

“It’s not ‘woe is me,’” Robinson told viewers. “I’m learning about who I am, I’m learning myself as a person, as a woman.” The former En Vogue member labelled it an “adventure” and an “unexpected path that I’ve enjoyed quite a bit.”

Robinson also promised to document more of her life in future YouTube videos.
