Emmys 2026: Academy confirms rule changes, including stance on AI
The Television Academy has announced a host of rule changes for the Emmy Awards 2026, including an updated AI policy.
The involvement of AI in and across the creative industry has been a long and increasingly pertinent topic of discussion. As such, the Television Academy has stated that they reserve the right to inquire about the use of AI in submissions.
Nonetheless, they have reiterated that the focus “remains centered on human storytelling, regardless of the tools used to bring it to life.”
The changes announced for the 78th Emmy Awards include a name change, from the ‘Outstanding Television Movie’ category to the ‘Outstanding Movie’ to reflect cinematic streaming habits.
There will also be a new interest in short-form program categories; ‘Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series’ and ‘Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama, or Variety Series’ will now be tracked categories.
Additionally, ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program’ has been split into two categories: ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction Program’ and ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Reality Program’.
It has also been announced that the Television Academy has introduced a ‘Legacy Award’, which specifically aims to celebrate shows that have made a “profound and lasting impact” on audiences and managed to remain relevant to society, culture, and the industry.
The awards have also expanded professional titles in casting, costumes, lighting, camera, technical arts, and reality programming for eligibility.
The full list of changes has been announced on the official Television Academy website.
The Emmy Awards will stay in the usual mid-September slot, on September 14th. It will be broadcast from the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
Winners of the Emmy Awards 2025 included Owen Cooper, a newcomer and 15-year-old actor known for his formidable work in the one-shot extravaganza, Adolescence, as well as The Pitt, which won the award for ‘Outstanding Drama Series’.
