Emmys 2025: Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard land unexpected acting nominations
Classic directors Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard have both made history with this year’s Emmy Awards nominations, having each been given the nod in an unexpected category.
The pair have both been nominated for the award of ‘Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series’ for their cameo roles in Seth Rogen’s co-created Apple TV comedy series The Studio.
Scorsese and Howard are joined in their category by fellow The Studio alum Dave Franco, Bryan Cranston, and Anthony Mackie, as well as Jon Bernthal for The Bear.
It marks the first time either of these Hollywood filmmakers has received an award nomination at the Emmys for their acting work, making it one of the most intriguing category competitions to emerge this year.
For the part of the series itself, it has also enjoyed a successful Emmys nominations sweep, getting nods for ‘Best Comedy Series’ as well as in the main acting categories for its lead cast, including Rogen, Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara.
The Studio follows Rogen as the main character of Matt Remick, a movie studio executive who unexpectedly becomes president of his company and quickly realises that he may be out of his depth in his new role.
The series has a huge amount of Hollywood guest stars such as Olivia Wilde, Zac Efron, and Charlize Theron, but Rogen spoke previously of convincing Scorsese to feature by telling him: “All anyone wants is a good joke.”
Rogen added: “The set of this show was the first time I met Martin Scorsese, and we couldn’t believe he did it.”
The Emmy Awards will take place on September 14th, 2025, with Severance, The Penguin, and The White Lotus leading the total nominations.
