Emmys 2025: Ayo Edebiri creates female history with double nomination for ‘The Bear’

The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri has created Emmy history after becoming the first woman to be nominated for both her work as an actor and a director on a comedy series.

Edebiri is already an Emmy winner, having previously won the award for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series’ for The Bear in 2023. She was nominated again in the ‘Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series’ category last year, but lost out to Hacks star Jean Smart.

At the 2025 edition of the Emmys, Edebiri is again nominated in the ‘Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series’ category, but she does face tough competition from her peers.

If Edebiri is to be successful, she will have to beat Smart, who took home the prize last year, as well as Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, Nobody Wants This star Kristen Bell and The Residence’s Uzo Aduba.

Additionally, for the first time in her career, Edebiri is nominated for an Emmy thanks to her directing skills. She directed the ‘Napkins’ episode of The Bear’s third series, which has been shortlisted for ‘Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series’. The category also features episodes of Hacks, Mid-Century Modern, The Rehearsal and The Studio.

While Edebiri has already etched her name in the history books thanks to securing nominations in these two prestigious categories, she’ll hope to go a step further and add to her one Emmy that currently rests in her trophy cabinet.

Edebiri isn’t the only history maker among the nominees; Kathy Bates has become the oldest woman in history to be nominated for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’. Harrison Ford also has reason to celebrate after landing his first-ever Emmy nomination, thanks to Shrinking.

Elsewhere, Severance was the most nominated drama series with 27 nods across all of the categories. The Penguin followed closely behind with 24, and The White Lotus landed in third place after securing 23 nominations.

This year’s ceremony will take place on September 14th at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze.
