Emmys 2024: Elton John achieves EGOT status
In the world of performing arts, the EGOT achievement is seen as one of the highest honours that is up for grabs. Elton John is the latest to join that exclusive club with a win at Emmys 2024.
John picked up an Emmy for the ‘Best Variety Special (Live)’ category, winning with his Farewell From Dodger Stadium special. It is a bittersweet experience for fans as it documents the legendary musician’s final North American show.
Producer Ben Winston delivered the acceptance speech since John couldn’t attend due to a knee operation. Winston said: “He’s absolutely fine, but he wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award. We did know this was going to be historic because it was going to win a man who has created the soundtrack to all of our lives. He’s done so much great for society, who is all of our heroes. We didn’t know that it was going to win him an EGOT.”
However, to celebrate the historical achievement, John released a statement that he had prepared for this special occasion.
The musician began: “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world.”
He added: “Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”
