Eminem’s stalker convicted by jury after three home invasions
Long-time stalker of Eminem, 32-year-old Matthew David Hughes, has been convicted of breaking and entering into the rapper’s home a second time. The official charges levelled against the perpetrator are first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking.
As reported by the Detroit Free Press, the 32-year-old appeared at a hearing, where Eminem testified about the incident. The recent trial concerned an incident last summer, after which Hughes was booked by law enforcement at Macomb County Jail.
Hughes previously appeared in court after another invasion last summer. During a preliminary hearing in December, a judge insisted that he had no contact with Eminem. After a 30-minute deliberation, a jury returned a guilty verdict.
Their first run-in happened in 2020, when Eminem reported waking up to find Hughes standing behind him. When asked why he was there, Hughes said he was there to kill him. Hughes accepted a plea deal and received four years of probation for this incident. However, as soon as his probation ended last year, the second break-in happened only months later.
In 2019, Hughes first broke into one of Eminem’s former homes in the Rochester Hills area of Detroit. He later served a 90-day prison term after being convicted of breaking. The story of his obsession has harrowing similarities to Eminem’s famous song, ‘Stan’, which details a fan who sends the rapper increasingly disturbing messages in a pseudo-stalker relationship.
This is the second stalking case involving a celebrity that has reached court this week. 48-year-old Jimmy Wayne Carwyle was charged with stalking, vandalism and threat of bodily harm after allegedly crashing his car through the front gate of actor Jennifer Aniston’s Los Angeles home on Monday.
Hughes will be sentenced on 17th June.
