Elton John has lost sight in his right eye: “I haven’t been able to see”
While Elton John had opened up about a terrifying infection in his right eye, he has now said that he has not been able to see properly for the past four months.
The legendary pianist revealed that he had been in recovery since the summer of 2024 due to an infection in his eye. While he initially had a limited line of vision, he has now stated that his vision has been completely obstructed.
In a conversation with Good Morning America, John mentioned that he hasn’t been able to make a full recovery in months, stating, “I, unfortunately, lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France. And it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. And my left eye’s not the greatest.”
John also said that he has struggled to venture into the studio due to the infection not clearing up. Despite still working with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, John felt that he could hardly contribute anything to a new album, stating that he “can’t see a lyric to start”.
What are Elton John’s current health issues?
John’s impaired vision has come after the icon had retired from the road after years of being onstage. While he is still content to make music, he explained that there was hardly anything left in the tank for him to do on the road, saying, “There’s not much of me left. I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate, I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left of me is my left hip.”
However, John has been content to work in the studio for the foreseeable future. Outside of his recent collaborations with everyone from Dua Lipa to Gorillaz, he has also had music in the works that he has been working on with Bernie Taupin. He also released the song ‘Never Too Late’ in conjunction with the documentary on Disney+, written by country singer Brandi Carlile.
Despite his touring retirement, John said that working on the album gives him a good excuse to keep him working, even remarking that some of the new material would come as a surprise to fans. As of yet, there has been no word on when any album is going to be released.
