Elton John discusses plans for new music: “I’m always looking to create things”
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on December 17th, Elton John confirmed that he still plans to make new music.
Elton retired from touring in 2023 following his lengthy farewell tour which began in 2018. His final concert in Los Angeles occurred at the Dodgers Stadium in 2022 and is the subject of a new Disney+ documentary, It’s Never Too Late, which John was promoting during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Due to the perfect nature of his final tour, John has no regrets about bowing out, telling Colbert of retirement, “It’s the most fantastic thing in the world. I ended on a high, my voice was great, the piano playing was great, the band was great. There are other things I want to do with my life that are more important than touring.”
However, John remains committed to his creative passion, and last month, he shared the new duet ‘Never Too Late’ with Brandi Carlisle. The track, which appears on the soundtrack for It’s Never Too Late, has been shortlisted for ‘Best Original Song’ at the Academy Awards, and John has now reiterated that he has plenty more new material in the pipeline
The singer told Colbert: “The juices have never dried up. They never want to dry up because I’m always looking to create things. It’s just having the space now to do it at my own time.” Elton concluded: “Of course there will be new Elton John music.”
In recent months, an eye infection has stopped John from writing new songs. His collaborator, Bernie Taupin, typically sends John lyrics which he then pairs with original music, but due to troubles with his vision, Elton can’t currently read Taupin’s lyrics.
