Rising star Eliza Shaddad has shared her latest single, the stinging and caustic ‘Now You’re Alone’.
The minor key quasi-ballad burns with intensity and builds to a climax throughout, with Shaddad’s initial near-whisper growing louder and louder as she ominously intones “the world has turned its back on you/now you’re alone/do you feel the way I do?”
As the drums turn from a gentle skip into a powerful gallop, the song begins to swim in swaths of strings and guitars, creating a sonic tapestry that becomes all-encompassing once it reaches its maximalist bridge section. It’s a masterclass in dynamics, one that plays into the heightened emotions of Shaddad’s lyrics.
“I was feeling apart from the world and raging against that,” Shaddad explains about the song’s genesis. “Watching the news every day and feeling like I wanted to scream, so I wrote a song you can scream-sing to.”
Well, there’s certainly a lot to scream-sing about these days and Shaddad keys into exactly what any discerning listener really needs from their music: catharsis. When there’s nothing to do but shout out at nothing in particular, you might as well rear back and make it a howl.
If Shaddad’s blend of soulful pop and bluesy drama is your cup of tea, and it certainly is mine, stay tuned for her upcoming album The Woman You Want when it comes out on July 16.
