Edgar Wright teases potential reunion with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost: “I would love to do something”
In a new interview with Far Out, director Edgar Wright has discussed the chances of reuniting with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in the future.
The trio famously worked together on the iconic sitcom Spaced, before stamping their mark on British cinema with the Cornetto trilogy, consisting of 2004’s Shaun of the Dead, 2007’s Hot Fuzz, and 2013’s The World’s End.
Since their last film together, Wright has made movies such as Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho, and his new project, an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man, which is out in UK cinemas now.
Meanwhile, Pegg has continued to star in the Mission: Impossible series, among other projects, and Frost has signed on to play Hagrid in the upcoming HBO series adaptation of Harry Potter.
Speaking exclusively with Far Out, Wright gave the green light to working with Pegg and Frost again in the future on the strict condition that it was the right project, stating, “Making movies is so difficult that it has to be done with real passion. Otherwise, it’s really hard work.”
He continued, “I would love to do something with Simon again. But, of course, I don’t want it to be an obligation. I want it to be something that I’d be really excited to do with them.”
The director reiterated this message by stressing that it will only happen if they believe there is a story that needs to be told by them, adding, “So that’s the thing, is finding that subject matter that we’d all be really excited about, rather than thinking, ‘Well, they want a fourth one, so we better do a fourth one’. I think you’ve got to make movies that you want to make, and not the movies that you think you ought to make.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Wright reflected on the success of Shaun of the Dead and how it led to a surreal life-changing conversation with horror master George A Romero. “George A Romero called me and Simon [Pegg], having just watched Shaun, and called us up in London to talk about the movie,” Wright recalled.
He profoundly continued, “I still can remember where I was standing in my flat at the time, having a chat with one of the masters of horror. It was a very surreal experience, but it was also, I really think of that as a change in my life, you know?”
The Running Man is out in cinemas now in UK and Irish ahead of its release in North America on November 14th.
