Eddie Vedder documentary, ‘Matter of Time’, about rare genetic skin disorder lands on Netflix

A new documentary, starring Eddie Vedder, about a rare skin disorder has started streaming on Netflix.

Matter of Time, which started streaming on the platform on February 9th, chronicles the benefit concert that Vedder helmed in 2023 in order to raise money in the fight against epidermolysis bullosa.

In 2010, along with his wife, Jill, Vedder founded the EB Research Partnership, which aims to find a cure for the disorder by 2030. The Vedders founded the charity after Jill’s childhood friend’s child was diagnosed with epidermolysis bullosa, which is a condition close to their heart.

According to the EB Research Partnership, it is “a family of life-threatening rare genetic disorders that affect the body’s largest organ: the skin”.

They also state on their website, “It is estimated that 500,000 people worldwide have EB. Individuals with the most severe forms of EB have a life expectancy from early infancy to 30 years of age.”

Vedder’s film highlights the two concerts that took place at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall in October 2023 with an original score by Broken Social Scene, as well as featuring stories by families who have been affected by epidermolysis bullosa.

In a statement, Vedder said of Matter of Time, “We are so grateful to the music community, and the entire team who made these concerts and this film possible. This is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of community.”

Meanwhile, Michael Hund, the CEO of EB Research Partnership, also noted, “This film celebrates our community of courageous patients and families, and highlights the real scientific progress that is happening right now.”

Hund added, “Our goal is to raise the visibility of this urgent cause and to inspire others to join us in our mission to cure EB by 2030.”

He also hopes that they will be able to replicate this and “take our model to thousands of other rare diseases”.
