The prestigious Sarajevo Film Festival, which starts today and continues until 20th August, have announced the closing film of the week-long program.
Directed by Dragan Bjelogrlic and Zoran Lisinac, Toma is a biopic about Serbian folk icon Tomislav ‘Toma’ Zdravković.
Toma documents the life of the Bohemian singer from his small-town origins to his status as a national figure. While following the various facets of Zdravković’s life, the film also paints a compelling portrait of the socio-economic reality of former Yugoslavia.
“Toma was known as a ‘poet of the soul,’” Bjelogrlić said in an interview with Variety about the feature film.
Adding: “His songs have a very special sadness, singing about his controversial life. I made a movie based on that specific emotion, trying to discover the roots of that amazing sadness.”
Following multiple parallel narratives, Toma contains interviews with the late singer’s friends and contemporaries. It also follows the connection he shared with the doctor who treated him in his final days when he was battling with prostate cancer after suffering for 17 years.
