Donald Trump launches attack on “destructive, woke” Tom Hanks

Donald Trump has praised the West Point military academy in New York for cancelling an awards ceremony intended to honour Tom Hanks, branding him a “destructive, woke recipient.”

Hanks had been due to receive an award for being an “outstanding citizen” at the academy on September 25th, as he has a track record of embodying the organisation’s three core ideals of “duty, honour [and] country”. However, the ceremony has now been cancelled, meaning the actor won’t receive the prize.

Responding to this news, the US President wrote on his Truth Social platform: “Our great West Point (getting greater all the time!) has smartly cancelled the Award Ceremony for actor Tom Hanks,” before adding that this was an “important move” as “We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!!”.

Trump then went on to note: “Hopefully the Academy Awards, and other Fake Award Shows, will review their Standards and Practices in the name of Fairness and Justice. Watch their DEAD RATINGS SURGE!”

The president and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, Mark Biegler, announced the cancellation of the ceremony in an email to all those within the organisation.

In the email, he said the lack of awards would allow the academy to “focus on its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army.”

Since beginning his second administration at the start of this year, Trump has made a renewed focus of inserting himself into various cultural spaces, most recently announcing that he will be hosting this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, while he seeks to rename the iconic venue after himself.

During an interview with LBC in 2016, Hanks said of Trump: “You know, look, I’m voting for Hillary Clinton. I’m not making any secret about that because I have absolutely no faith in a self-serving gas bag like the other guy who’s running for President.”

The Hollywood star continued: “I view all of our problems as if we have a very, very serious heart condition that needs the most precise, long-term care to look after and I’m not going to turn to somebody who says. ‘You know, you want me to be a cardiac surgeon? I can be a cardiac surgeon if I want to. No, I’m going to go to somebody who is the most experienced, the most knowledgeable and the most wise when it comes down to looking after problems that are affecting everybody on the planet earth right now.”
