Donald Trump celebrates CBS cancelling ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’: “Jimmy Kimmel is next”
Donald Trump has again expressed his dislike for Stephen Colbert after the news that his longstanding CBS programme, The Late Show, has been cancelled.
On July 17th, CBS confirmed that the popular talk show would not be renewed beyond the next season and that a different host would not replace Colbert in the slot, which is set to be vacated in 2026.
Colbert delivered the news to fans himself. Addressing the studio audience as well as those watching at home, Colbert said in the episode that aired on July 17th: “Before we start the show, I want to let you know something I found out just last night. Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending The Late Show in May.”
Though fans who tune in each night were saddened, the President of the United States appeared to be overjoyed at the news. On Truth Social, he wrote, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings.”
He lashed out at other talk show hosts, adding, “I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.”
As a result of Colbert losing his programme, his late-night peer Jimmy Kimmel has already rushed to show support, writing on his Instagram Stories, “Love you Stephen. Fuck you and all your Sheldons CBS.”
CBS’s decision to axe the show comes just days after Colbert publicly took CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, to task for settling a $16 million lawsuit with Trump. The suit concerned a ’60 Minutes’ interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris that aired in 2024.
The final episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will air in May 2026. Watch the heartfelt announcement of the programme cancellation below.
