Disney puts ‘Tangled’ live-action remake on hold following ‘Snow White’ flop

Following Snow White’s unsuccessful spell at the box office, Disney has now reportedly paused plans for a live-action remake of Tangled.

Controversy has followed Snow White since it was announced back in 2021. The movie, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, has been embroiled in scandal for various reasons, including Peter Dinklage criticised Disney’s decision to use CGI instead of actors with dwarfism to play the Seven Dwarfs and the political beliefs of the two stars.

Snow White topped the box office for its opening weekend despite the backlash faced by viewers, which made it one of the lowest-rated movies in IMDB’s history. However, it didn’t quite hit the heights anticipated. In the United States, it secured $44.3 million and overall achieved a total of $87.3 million from its global launch, which is below the $100 million expectation.

In its second weekend of release, Snow White suffered a slump at the box office, as sales declined by a staggering 66 per cent. It was displaced at the top spot in the United States by the new Jason Statham movie A Working Man, which secured $15.2 million in theatres.

Before factoring in marketing costs, Snow White cost Disney more than $250 million to make, which now seems like an impossible figure to claw back from box office sales.

As a result, The Hollywood Reporter state that Disney’s plans for a Tangled live-action remake have “been put on pause” and “it remains uncertain whether Tangled will move forward down the road or undergo a creative rethink”.

The project was previously in active development with Michael Gracey, director of The Greatest Showman and Better Man, on board to helm the movie with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson set to write a script.

Earlier this year, Daria Cercek was announced as the new head of live-action theatrical films at Disney as part of a wider restructuring after David Greenbaum replaced Sean Bailey as president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios in 2024.
