‘Snow White’ producer’s son blames movie’s failure on Rachel Zegler’s politics
Jonah Platt, the son of Snow White producer Marc Platt, has claimed that Rachel Zegler‘s political stances “clearly hurt the film’s box office”.
Zegler has regularly used her social media platforms to support the people of Palestine and has also condemned President Donald Trump on multiple occasions. Notably, upon sharing the first trailer for Snow White in August 2023, she posted another tweet in the thread that read, “And always remember, free Palestine.”
This led Marc Platt to visit Zegler in New York and talk with Zegler about her social media conduct after the pro-Palestine post gained nearly ten million likes on X, according to Variety.
Now, his son, Jonah, in a now-deleted Instagram comment has defended his father’s conduct after he was accused of being “creepy as hell” for reprimanding Zegler for expressing her opinion.
Platt responded by writing: “You really want to do this? Yeah, my dad, the producer of enormous piece of Disney IP with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, had to leave his family to fly across the country to reprimand his 20 year old employee for dragging her personal politics into the middle of promoting the movie for which she signed a multi-million dollar contract to get paid and do publicity for.”
The actor and podcast host continued: “This is called adult responsibility and accountability. And her actions clearly hurt the film’s box office. Free speech does not mean you’re allowed to say whatever you want in your private employment without repercussions.”
Platt concluded: “Tens of thousands of people worked on that film and she hijacked the conversation for her own immature desires at the risk of all the colleagues and crew and blue collar workers who depend on that movie to be successful. Narcissism is not something to be coddled or encouraged.”
Snow White did top the box office for its opening weekend despite the backlash faced by viewers on IMDB. However, it didn’t quite hit the heights anticipated. In the United States, it secured $44.3 million and overall achieved a total of $87.3 million from its global launch which is below the $100 million expectation.
It currently has a rating of 1.6 out of 10 on IMDB following 167,000 reviews from viewers who have seen Snow White at cinemas, making it one of the lowest-rated films on the platform.
