Disgusting ‘Saltburn’ vinyl set to be released

Since the 1950s, record companies have explored new ways to make their products more appealing to the average record store customer. In the 1960s, The Beatles prospered with the dramatic colour on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and its blank 1968 follow-up. In the following decade, Pink Floyd again raised the bar with several iconic Hipgnosis collaborations. Now, Saltburn seems to have raised the bar once again.

Since the beginning of the vinyl comeback around 15 years ago, coloured vinyl and picture discs have become increasingly popular. In the modern day, we have several listening media at our disposal, from tapes to streaming platforms, and so many records are collected as luxury collector’s items rather than listening necessities.

With this change in the vinyl industry, much more time and energy is going into making these plastic discs unique and marketable, whether that’s Yard Act’s colour-it-in-yourself sleeve for Where’s My Utopia? or LICE’s inclusion of sea monkey pets in their forthcoming album, Third Time At The Beach.

Modern 180-gram vinyl allows for innovation within the discs themselves, too, and that’s where the genius lies in this forthcoming Saltburn soundtrack album. Inspired by one of the movie’s several controversial scenes, liquid-filled record manufacturers Bad World have created their most ingenious product to date.

Saltburn: Music From The Motion Picture features music from Emerald Fennell’s 2023 black comedy, including Bloc Party’s ‘This Modern Love’, Girls Aloud’s ‘Sound Of The Underground’, The Killers’ ‘Mr Brightside’ and, of course, Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s show-stopper ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’.

The final scene, which saw Barry Keoghan’s psychopathic character, Oliver Quick, dance nude to ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, was undoubtedly a point of conversation after the movie’s viral circulation last December. However, the upcoming [Bath Water Edition] vinyl copies pay homage to another, more toe-curling scene.

The scene in question is that in which Quick spies on Jacob Elordi’s character, Felix Catton, while he masturbates in the bath. As he leaves the bathroom, the dirty, inseminated bathwater spirals down the plughole, but not before Quick sneaks in to give the last dregs a good licking.

Inspired by this scene, these special vinyl copies are pressed into clear vinyl, with a slightly creamy bathwater-like liquid enclosed. The image of a plug hole on the centre label completes the impressive illusion. The record won’t hit the shelves until September 27th, but if such a gut-churning souvenir appeals to you, you can pre-order the record now.
