The director Jennifer Lawrence is dying to work with: “He’s never asked me”
There’s almost a bizarre butterfly effect that exists within the cinemaverse of Christopher Nolan.
Because Cillian Murphy, a man who Christopher Nolan almost cast as Batman, eventually won his first Oscar under the direction of Nolan, in a film inspired by a gift given to Nolan by Robert Pattinson. A Robert Pattinson who, in addition to starring in Nolan’s Tenet, also featured as Batman in Matt Reeves’ adaptation.
Maybe a stretch, maybe coincidental or maybe fate, but nevertheless, I think it goes to prove the myriad touchpoints Nolan seems to have over modern Hollywood. Climbing up the ladder of intellectual cinema, in recent years, he’s become the go-to guy when it comes to movie-making bucket lists. Actors from all over the world have got his name in big bold writing, as they manifest their yearly career mood ambitions for a credit in one of his movies is as close to cinematic immortality as you’re likely to get in the modern world.
Just take a look at the news reaction to his casting for the upcoming 2026 epic The Odyssey. The fact that three Nolan debutants – Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal – will be leading the film, caused an excited stir amongst cinema goers because it still puts these relatively well known and established actors, in what many people consider to be a unique creative environment.
That curiosity amongst us is born from the rumour mill. What we hear actors say, as they describe the experience of being on a Nolan set and assuring fans, it’s like nothing else. In fact, Holland gushed about his debut recently to GQ, saying, “It was amazing. The job of a lifetime, without a doubt. The best experience I’ve had on the film set. Incredible.”
Adding, “I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure. To get a front row seat to that and to be a part of the process and to collaborate with a true master of his craft and learn from him was the best experience I’ve ever had.”
Pattinson is also in Nolan’s upcoming 2026 film, and joins a privileged alumni of actors who have had the opportunity of working with the director twice now. A point not lost on him, nor his most recent costar Jennifer Lawrence, who shared the screen with him on Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love.
In fact, it was during a recent press run where Pattinson really stuck the boot into Lawrence, and reminded her exactly what it was she was missing. When asked by Pattinson if there was a director Lawrence would “never say no to,” she responded with, “Well, yeah, but he’s never asked me to be in anything”, before revealing said director was Nolan.
As Pattinson jokingly informed her, “He’s pretty good”, Lawrence responded with feigned frustration, “Must be nice, tell him I said, ‘Hi’,” in a facetiously but subtly genuine plea that might land her in Nolan’s next project. Really, it wouldn’t be a stretch for Lawrence to be placed in one of his upcoming projects, given she is an Oscar winner herself and could easily carry the weight of whatever project he is directing. But with a Greek epic to come out first, all we can do is wait and see.
