Director Christopher Landon quits ‘Scream 7’: “A dream job that turned into a nightmare”

Movie director Christopher Landon has pulled out of the production of Scream 7, the latest instalment in the classic slasher horror franchise, explaining the job “turned into a nightmare.”

In a social media post, the filmmaker also known for his work on Freaky and the Paranormal Activity movies, explained: “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others.”

The disgruntled director continued: “It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.” Landon is primarily known within the industry as a screenwriter, but he had relished the opportunity to direct something spawned by his hero Wes Craven.

“I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world,” he said. “What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

This marks yet another chapter in the film’s troubled production. Earlier this year, actor Melissa Barrera was fired voicing public support of Palestine in the ongoing conflict, and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega also decided not to return to the production.

At present, it is unclear where his leaves the feature. Currently, no mention has been made of a replacement director by the producers, but it is clear that Landon’s departure is final.

The film was set to premiere in late 2024, however, this seems no longer feasible. After already being delayed by 148 days thanks to the strikes in Hollywood, this will keep eager fans waiting a little longer still.
