Oscar-nominated director Brady Corbet releases three new commercials for Bloomberg

Less than a week after being nominated for ‘Best Director’ at the Oscars, The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet has released three new commercials for Bloomberg.

Corbet first discussed the set of adverts during an appearance on WTF with Marc Maron last month, when he explained the harsh reality of his financial situation despite directing a movie that was nominated for ten Oscars.

The director told the comedian that he and his wife/writing partner, Mona Fastvold, “made zero dollars on the last two films that we made,” before adding, “Yes. Actually, zero. We had to just sort of live off of a pay cheque from three years ago.”

He elaborated: “I mean, our film premiered in September. So I’ve been doing this for six months and had zero income because I don’t have any time to go to work. I can’t even take a writing job at the moment.”

However, despite not earning any money while on the promotional trail, Corbet was offered a lifeline when an opportunity to shoot three Bloomberg adverts in Portugal arose. He told Maron that it was “an opportunity that landed in my lap, and I jumped at it.”

Now, these adverts have arrived as part of Bloomberg’s ‘Context Changes Everything’ campaign. “While the scale and format differ, the core of directing remains the same, whether it’s a feature film or an advertisement. No matter what, it’s always a puzzle of pacing and visuals — but at the end of the day, it’s all about creating a powerful story,” Corbet said in a statement.

The director continued: “This Bloomberg campaign proves you can craft something meaningful, something that sparks thought, just like a long-form film strives to do.”

The advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy New York, which collaborated with the director on the project, has labelled the set of adverts The Contextualist in honour of Corbet. The three 30-second films are available to watch below.
