Diane Keaton’s family confirm cause of death

The family of the late Hollywood icon Diane Keaton have confirmed her cause of death.

Keaton, who won the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress’ for her performance in the Woody Allen movie Annie Hall, died on October 11th, aged 79.

Now, it has been confirmed by her loved ones that she died due to pneumonia. The Keaton family told People: “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11.”

Paramedics reportedly arrived at her home on October 11th, and Keaton was transferred to a local hospital shortly before she died.

In support of her legacy, they have also encouraged fans to donate to a local food bank or animal shelter, which she deeply cared about.

They continued, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”

Following her death, Hollywood has honoured Keaton. Francis Ford Coppola, who cast Keaton in The Godfather, took to Instagram to write: “Words can’t express the wonder and talent of Diane Keaton. Endlessly intelligent, so beautiful. From her earliest performances in Hair and throughout her amazing career, she was an extraordinary actor.”

The director concluded by sharing, “Everything about Diane was creativity personified.”

Meanwhile, Woody Allen, who cast Keaton in seven of his movies and also worked with her on Broadway before either was famous, poignantly wrote: “A few days ago the world was a place that included Diane Keaton. Now it’s a world that does not. Hence, it’s a drearier world. Still, there are her movies. And her great laugh still echoes in my head.”

Additionally, Keaton’s Marvin’s Room co-star Leonardo DiCaprio took to Instagram Stories to write, “Diane Keaton was one of a kind. Brilliant, funny and unapologetically herself. A legend, an icon and a truly kind human being.”
