Fox confirm plans for ‘Baywatch’ reboot
The hit television series Baywatch has been picked up for a reboot on Fox and will begin airing in 2026.
The series, which was originally a hit in the 1990s as a much-loved lifeguard drama that made huge stars out of its cast, including David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, will be getting a second outing over the course of 12 episodes shown throughout the 2026 and 2027 season of television.
The show’s original creative team, consisting of Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, and Dante Di Loreto, will come back on board to drive the project, while Matt Nix will serve as the showrunner and executive producer.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Thorn, the president of Fox Television Network, said in a statement: “In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status. Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback.”
He continued: “Together, Fox and Fremantle, along with Matt Nix and original co-creator Greg Bonann, will bring the California dream to a whole new generation of fans with fresh stories, rising stars and all the spectacle that make the ‘Baywatch’ franchise a global sensation.”
A series synopsis from Fox said that the reboot would have “all the adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and beachside heroics that defined the original — now with an entirely new cast, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.”
Various spin-offs have been attempted of the Baywatch franchise over the years, including a 2017 movie starring Dwayne Johnson and, most recently, a docuseries on Hulu last year, which featured a number of cast members from over the years reminiscing about their time on the show.
