Venice 2025: Dwayne Johnson had a “burning desire” to make a serious film like ‘The Smashing Machine’

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has admitted he had a “burning desire” to step away from making Hollywood blockbusters to create a more serious film like The Smashing Machine.

The actor was speaking at the Venice Film Festival (per Deadline) ahead of the premiere of his latest film, which is directed by Benny Safdie and stars Emily Blunt, in which he stars as former UFC star Mark Kerr.

However, the role marks a significant change in direction for Johnson, who has previously made a name largely starring in family blockbusters such as Jumanji and Moana over the course of his acting career.

Reflecting on his new venture, the former professional wrestler confessed to the reason why he was especially keen to take on the role. “When you’re in Hollywood, it becomes about box office,” he said. “And you chase the box office. And the box office in our business can be very resounding, and it could push you into a category.”

Despite this, Johnson emphasised that he wanted to avoid being “pigeonholed”, as he added: “I made those movies, and I liked them. They were fun. Some were really good and did well. And some not so much. But what I did realise is that I had this burning desire, and a voice in my head that said, ‘What if there is more?’”

Subsequently, he has spoken previously of how he was encouraged by Blunt, who plays Kerr’s girlfriend Dawn Staples – and whom the actor has previously starred opposite in Disney’s Jungle Cruise – about veering towards the more serious and dramatic role.

The Smashing Machine is set to receive its premiere at the Venice Film Festival before being released theatrically on October 3rd.
