Exploring Dennis Hopper's personal 1960s photography 'In Dreams'

In Dreams, the most recent photobook collecting the work of iconic American actor, filmmaker, photographer, and artist Dennis Hopper, stylistically connects his personal and working life in a series of iconic stand-alone images.

Hopper, who famously appeared alongside James Dean in the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause, went on to enjoy a prolific career with award-winning and critically acclaimed performances in films such as Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Apocalypse Now, David Lynch film Blue Velvet and David Anspaugh’s Hoosiers—a performance which ultimately earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 59th Academy Awards.

Hopper’s legacy in cinema is an everlasting one having made his directorial film debut with Easy Rider in 1969, a film that he and co-star Peter Fonda wrote with Terry Southern and pioneered the counter-culture movement of the time and earned him his first nomination for the Academy Award in the Best Original Screenplay category.

While relentless working in the arts, Hopper’s creative drive has propelled him into new avenues with every given project. His cinematic achievements have, like many who have been in the industry for such a long period of time, enjoyed many ups and downs as his determination forced him to bounce back from the occasional box office flop.

Looking beyond his achievements in film, Hopper found solitude away from the camera and thrust his time and efforts into several artistic pursuits beyond cinema. Successfully translating his creative vision into photography, painting and sculptor, Hopper continuously documented his life as actor, director, husband and father.

In Dreams, a new book published by Damiani, collects some of Hopper’s ‘scenes from the archives’ which offers a glimpse behind the scenes of his life both professionally and personally. Editor and designer Michael Schmelling has selected more than 100 photographs from Hopper’s archive, most of which have remained unpublished until now, to detail an intimate insight through Hopper’s own eye.

With some famous faces such as John Wayne, Peter Fonda, Wallace Berman and more all making an appearance, you can enjoy a little glimpse of what is inside the book, below.
