Denis Villeneuve confirms ‘Dune: Messiah’ will be his final movie in the series
Dune director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that he plans to step back from the series of films after the third instalment, Dune: Messiah.
As of yet, the third film in Villeneuve’s reboot is yet to be officially green lit by Warner Bros, but the director seemingly expects the movie to be made. His latest comments arrive shortly before the release of Dune: Part Two, starring Timotheé Chalamet and Zendaya, which will enter cinemas on March 1st, 2024.
In a new interview with Time, the director revealed: “Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me.”
Despite Villeneuve’s remarks, Frank Herbert wrote six Dune books, which leaves the door open for another director to take the reins, and produce a further three films. However, there is yet to be any signs that Warner Bros will take this route.
His new statement follow a previous update provided by the filmmaker, where he said that the screenplay “is almost finished but it is not finished”.
Meanwhile, Zendaya, recently confirmed she would happily be involved in Dune: Messiah, if Villeneuve came calling.
“Would we be down? I mean of course. Any time Denis calls it’s a yes from me. I’m excited to see what happens,” the actor admitted in a recent interview.
In the same interview with Time, Villeneuve also spoke about the current state of cinema. While he’s not worried about artificial intelliginge, he noted “we behave like algorithms, as filmmakers. We’re in a very conservative time; creativity is restricted. Everything’s about Wall Street. What will save cinema is freedom and taking risks. And you feel the audience is excited when they see something they haven’t seen before.”
