Demi Lovato comes out as non-binary

Demi Lovato has announced that they have a non-binary gender and will be changing their pronouns to they/them as Lovato says they are “still learning and coming into myself”.

Lovato has been a longtime supporter of LGBTQ causes. In 2016, they refused to perform a concert in North Carolina after the state passed a law that limited access for transgender people. Glaad, the LGBTQ right organisation, shared at the time that Lovato “consistently used her platform as a successful artist to send messages of acceptance and support to LGBT people everywhere”.

“This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work”, wrote Lovato in a statement shared on Twitter about her decision. “I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.

“I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones,” they continued. “Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way.”

Lovato has described themselves as “queer” for some time often noting that their sexuality was fluid and, last year, confirming they were “still figuring it out” having told their parents years prior “that I saw myself ending up possibly with a woman,” continuing, “I think love is love. You can find it in any gender.”

The pop star, who shot to fame through Disney, will now use the pronouns they and them to describe themselves in a bid to “best represent the fluidity I feel in my gender expression.”

A brave move from one of the biggest pop stars around. 4D with Demi is produced by OBB Sound
