Debbie Harry to make acting return as Pamela Anderson’s mother in new comedy movie

Over a decade on from her last role on the big screen, Debbie Harry is set to make a return to acting, starring as Pamela Anderson’s mother in a new comedy film.

The Blondie singer is set to lead the cast of the film Maitreya alongside Anderson, reigniting her acting career after being best-known for her roles throughout the 1980s, including in Hairspray and David Cronenberg’s Videodrome

However, Deadline reports that she has been lured back to the big screen for the comedy movie, being directed by Jonathan Krisel, and with a script written by Samuel D Hunter.

According to the publication, the film is set to follow “Maitreya (Anderson), a rising star in the New Age Healing community who is about to head off to a conference in India when she receives a call from her estranged sister, Monica: their father is dying.”

The synopsis adds: “Rather than stay home with him, Maitreya decides to bring her entire family – including her mother Barbara (Harry) – to the conference and put her New Age healing theories to the test (all while surreptitiously gathering material for her next book).”

For Anderson, it comes as the latest film in her current career resurgence, having gained critical acclaim for her role in The Last Showgirl, as well as putting her comedy chops to the test in the latest Naked Gun reboot opposite Liam Neeson.

She is also set to star in a packed roster of new films, not limited to Somedays with Billy Bob Thornton, and the directorial debut from Michael Cera, alongside Steve Coogan and Jamie Dornan.

It also signals a return to form for Harry, with Blondie’s latest musical effort, High Noon, expected to arrive at some point this year, following the release of their last album, Pollinator, in 2017, and the death of drummer Clem Burke in April 2025.

No further details on the wider casting or release of Maitreya have yet been revealed, although filming is set to commence towards the end of 2026.
