Former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra hospitalised after suffering stroke

Former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra has revealed that he’s been hospitalised after a stroke.

Biafra was admitted to the hospital on March 7th after he had a hemorrhagic stroke, which was caused by his high blood pressure.

On March 9th, Biafra, who served as Dead Kennedys frontman between 1978 and 1986, made the announcement about his health through the Instagram account of his record label, Alternative Tentacles.

Biafra began his statement by writing, “I hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me and I fell to the floor. I couldn’t even break the fall with my left arm because it wasn’t working either. I tried to hop back up again, and I couldn’t.”

The singer then shared an insight into his thought process as he realised that he was in the middle of suffering a stroke, adding, “I realized I had ‘fallen and I can’t get up!’ It was this point I thought, ‘Oh shit, I’m having a stroke!”

On a positive note, Biafra seemingly sounds assured that he’ll return to his best again, even if there is a long road ahead, sharing, “I still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now I gotta lotta of rehabbing to do.”

Per the Stroke Association, a “haemorrhagic stroke is when you have bleeding in or around the brain. This can damage brain cells. Damage to brain cells can affect how the body works. It can also change how you think, communicate and feel.”

It is a rare type of stroke compared with the ischaemic stroke, and in the United Kingdom, around 15 per cent of strokes are haemorrhagic strokes.

Biafra’s label has confirmed that he remains in hospital but is stable. They added, “We are all just very thankful he is OK and getting the care that he needs. We will update you all as we are able.”
