DC Studios chief acknowledges ‘Supergirl’ bombing at the box office: ‘Didn’t meet our expectations’
DC Studios has responded after Supergirl got off to a disappointing start at the box office.
The new superhero movie, starring Milly Alcock, arrived in cinemas around the world on June 26th and is the big summer release for their studio.
However, in North America during its opening weekend, Supergirl only recouped $38 million and a further $30 million from international territories.
They previously had anticipated $55 million in North America ticket sales alone for the same time period, which was already relatively low considering its vast $170 million budget, which doesn’t take into account marketing costs that are typically the same as the production budget.
Instead, Toy Story 5 remains at the top of the North American box office for the second consecutive week, generating $70 million domestically.
It has now made $585 million globally after arriving in cinemas on June 19th.
In addition to its disappointing start at the box office, Supergirl has seemingly not been a major hit with viewers, either, registering a middling 6.2/10 rating on IMDB and 56 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Speaking to the New York Times, Peter Safran, co-chairman and co-chief executive of DC Studios, responded to the unsatisfactory box office results, stating, “While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”
While it was only a few years ago when superhero movies were almost guaranteed to be a hit at the box office, there has been a notable downward trend in their popularity, which has made the tale of Supergirl not an isolated case.
In 2022, Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, failed to meet expectations, as well as Thunderbolts, The Marvels, and the Razzie-winning Madame Web.
