‘Dawson’s Creek’ star James Van Der Beek to sell memorabilia from show to fund cancer treatment
James Van Der Beek, the star of drama series Dawson’s Creek, is set to sell memorabilia from his career to pay for his cancer treatment.
Van Der Beek, who starred in the series that ran for six seasons alongside Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams, was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023 and made his battle public in late 2024.
In an interview with People, he shared his decision to sell memorabilia that he has accumulated throughout his career, saying, “I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now.”
Notable items that are set to be available for fans to purchase include the outfit he wore for the pilot episode of Dawson’s Creek and the cleats and hat he wore in the 1999 movie, Varsity Blues.
The item expected to be sold for the most is the necklace that Dawson handed to Joey in Dawson’s Creek, which is anticipated to be bought for between $26,400 and $52,800.
The actor also said, “While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”
The collection is set to be sold at the Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, which will take place between December 5th and December 7th.
Following his diagnosis, Van Der Beek has continued to act. However, he was only available to appear virtually in September at a Dawson’s Creek reunion in September that saw the cast come together for a read-through of the pilot episode.
At the time, he explained his absence, telling fans on Instagram that he had been struck down by “two stomach viruses conspired to knock me out of commission”.
