David Squires delves into… the manic moment Jarvis Cocker showed his bottom at the Brits
In a time of litigious crisis, Bob Mortimer might not be the saviour that you’re hoping for. But that’s the strange predicament that Jarvis Cocker found himself in after one fateful night at the Brits.
The Pulp frontman had pulled a moony while Michael Jackson was waffling on and chaos ensued. Such incidents don’t seem to happen anymore, tying this iconic, and typically British pop culture tale to a specific moment in time: February, 1996.
In fact, it was so tied to that time that Cocker even went on TV shortly afterwards to explain himself to Chris Evans of all people. Although there was a point in the proceedings when Cocker genuinely worried that he might be arrested, it now stands out as a charming remnant from the age of Shooting Stars, ‘Common People’, and corduroy-clad drunkenness on TV.
So, now, in the style of a club singer, and to the tune of ‘Babies’, the comic strip maestro David Squires musically reimagines the maddening incident that left everyone in stitches, singers in handcuffs, and about three people shocked and appalled.
