David Squires delves into… the manic making of Fleetwood Mac album ‘Rumours’
As the Flight of the Conchords gag goes: “Rumours? Nah, it was all true.” The making of the Fleetwood Mac classic was so manic that it has been perfect fodder for comical derision ever since. So, David Squires has joined them.
In his latest comic, he finds the frivolity in four people trapped in a rare love square. Triangles are common enough, but the odd orgy of swapping that was going on in the Mac was utter madness. Yet, you’d also be hard-pushed to say that the mania of it all didn’t somehow imbue the music with a certain magic.
Even Lindsey Buckingham agreed, commenting on the success of Rumours, “Whatever was going in the band, specifically between the two couples, very much informed the material, and I think that was a very great appeal of the album. If you look at the success that the album enjoyed, I think it goes a little bit beyond the music itself.”
So, while it might have been beyond stressful for the band at the time, at least it resulted in a thrilling album and afforded Squires the chance to poke fun at them. Check out his wild depiction of these strange days in the 1970s below…
