David Squires delves into… music’s ways to beat the January blues

Remember: Blue Monday, the supposed “most depressing day of the year”, isn’t real. It’s a PR campaign pushed by capitalists with no scientific backing. The third Monday in January is no more depressing than any of the other days in the bleak bastard of post-Christmas winter.

But thankfully, as David Squires points out in his latest comic strip, the vitality of music comes into its own during these dark days. As a study by the Music Institute of Chicago found through actual scientific research, “Music activates the reward system,” therefore, “boosting motivation, pleasure, and positive emotions.”

Perhaps that’s why musicians are all so cheery. You only have to look at Robert Smith to see the radiant glow of life permeate through 13 layers of off-white foundation. These are the figures that Squires has turned to as he looks for winter cheer in the world of pop culture.

From Billy Corgan’s tips for getting cosy to Van Morrison’s trip to the pub, these stereo stars offer perfect tips to burn away the winter woes in shimmering indie style. Enjoy…
