David Lynch reveals details of mysterious project

Experimental filmmaker and cinematic pioneer David Lynch has revealed that his mysterious new project is a new album made in collaboration with Chrystabell, titled Cellophane Memories.

Due to be released on August 2nd via Sacred Bones Records, the pair teased the new album with the release of its first single, ‘Sublime Eternal Love’. Released alongside a brand new music video from the filmmaker, the new track shows off the dreamlike audio that will likely underpin the entire forthcoming album, with the vocals of Chrystabell being reminiscent of the late Julee Cruise, whose songs scored much of Lynch’s Twin Peaks.

Chrystabell previously appeared in Twin Peaks: The Return, Lynch’s 2017 continuation of his celebrated series, in the role of Agent Tammy Preston.

Carrying a similar mood to the ethereal TV series, Chrystabell states that the album includes “many doors that are left open to wonder, wander and get turned around in…It’s like mood music…not that it creates mood, but more that it reflects your own”.

Last week, Lynch sent fans into wild speculation when he announced that “something is coming along for you to see and hear,” with some believing that he would be announcing a new series of Twin Peaks, while others hoped for a new feature film.

Having previously released three celebrated albums, BlueBOB in 2001, Crazy Clown Time in 2011, and The Big Dream in 2013, his latest announcement has fans hoping that he might be able to recapture his same former musical majesty.

The music video represents the first piece of Lynch filmmaking since he directed ‘I Am the Shaman’ for the Scottish folk musician Donovan. The director has not released a feature film since 2006’s surreal arthouse drama Inland Empire, starring Laura Dern and Harry Dean Stanton, which received significant plaudits at Toronto and Venice Film Festival, respectively.
