David Jonsson to star in Ryan Coogler’s next ‘Black Panther’ movie
Ryan Coogler has announced that Marvel Studios has given the green light to a third Black Panther film, and none other than David Jonsson will be stepping up to take the lead.
San Diego’s Comic-Con has been a notable affair this year, what with Johnny Depp appearing in full drag as Ebenezer Scrooge, and Guillermo del Toro giving another fantastic AI rebuttal.
But the biggest announcement by far to come out of the celebration was Coogler’s announcement that a third Black Panther movie is coming.
The film will hit cinemas on December 15th, 2028; movie-goers will see The Long Walk actor Jonsson step up to the title role.
Coogler gave fans in attendance more context about Jonsson’s role, sharing, “The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T’Challa, in that film.”
He added with a smile, “And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up [and] he comes of age.”
Following a standing ovation from the attending crowd, Jonsson shared his gratitude for the opportunity.
“I want to say thank you so much,” he told the audience. “Thank you, Ryan, thank you, Kevin [Feige], thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and the privilege and the blessing to join.”
He added, “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honour is entirely mine.”
Coogler made history in 2018, as he directed Boseman in the first Black Panther, marking the first time a black actor had headlined a Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
The sequel, 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, starred Letitia Wright, who is also set to reprise her role as Shuri, alongside Winston Duke, who will return as M’Baku.
