David Attenborough admits he’s nearing “end of my life” in new ‘Ocean’ documentary

As he approaches his 99th birthday, documentary maker David Attenborough has reflected on his life and frankly stated he is approaching “the end of my life”.

Attenborough made the honest admission in his new documentary, Ocean, which will be available to watch on Hulu and Disney+ later this year. In the film, the British icon reflects on his life so far and his mission to make the world a better place.

In the new documentary, which will also be available to watch in cinemas on May 8th, Attenborough’s 99th birthday, the filmmaker recalls, “When I first saw the sea as a young boy, it was thought of as a vast wilderness to be tamed and mastered for the benefit of humanity.”

Attenborough continued: “Now, as I approach the end of my life, we know the opposite is true. After living for nearly a hundred years on this planet, I now understand that the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea.”

While the current state of the ocean is a fear that is playing on Attenborough’s mind, but he does have optimism for the future, “Today, it is in such poor health I would find it hard not to lose hope were it not for the most remarkable discovery of all.”

He also proudly reflected on his career and shared his belief that it’s been a vital cause worth dedicating his life to, adding, “If we save the sea, we save our world. After a lifetime of filming our planet, I’m sure nothing is more important. The ocean can recover faster than we can ever imagine: it can bounce back to life.”

The new documentary’s cinematic release coincides with World Ocean Day next month, June’s United Nations Ocean Conference 2025, and midway through the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
