Dave Navarro hints at Jane’s Addiction exit in cryptic post
As the future of Jane’s Addiction appears to hang in the balance following an altercation between Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro at a concert on September 13th, Navarro has now broken his silence.
In July, the classic line-up of Jane’s Addiction released their first single in 34 years, ‘Imminent Redemption‘. It marked their first track since the return of bassist Eric Avery in 2022, and seemingly, everything was running smoothly for the band as they completed triumphant tours of Europe, South America and Australia.
However, as the rock icons entered the final stretch of their shows for 2024, the cracks began to appear. During a performance in New York on September 10th, Farrell apologised to the crowd for issues with his vocals, saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you. Something’s wrong with my voice. I just can’t get the notes out all of a sudden.”
Then, when they took to the stage in Boston on September 13th, their set ended prematurely after 11 songs when Farrell attacked Navarro for seemingly no reason. Crew members rushed to the stage and Avery also helped quell the situation. In light of the incident, Jane’s Addiction cancelled a performance at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater, Bridgeport, CT, on September 15th.
Taking to Instagram following the performance, the band shared, “We want to extend a heartfelt apology for the events that unfolded last night. As a result we will be cancelling tomorrow night’s show in Bridgeport.”
Now, Navarro has addressed to the situation albeit in cryptic fashion. Taking to Instagram, the guitarist shared an image of him taken in concert which sees him holding an acoustic guitar emblazoned with the Jane’s Addiction logo, which he captioned “Goodnight”.
While this doesn’t confirm Navarro’s exit from Jane’s Addiction, in the context of recent events, it suggests that he may have called time on his latest stint with the band. Although Navarro previously rejoined the group in 2008, he didn’t tour with the group for two years until 2024.
Why did Perry Farrell attack Dave Navarro?
At this stage, Farrell is yet to directly address the situation, but his wife, Etty Lau Farrell, has taken to Instagram to share an insight into why the incident occurred.
“Rather than speculating, I thought to post a first person account of what happened on stage,” Farrell began her post by stating before revealing that tension had been growing within the Jane’s Addiction camp for some time ahead of the Boston concert. long before the Boston show.
“Clearly there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members,” she commented, “the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit. Perry got up in Dave’s face and body checked him.”
“While Dave was keeping Perry at arm’s length to de-escalate the situation. Dan rushed over to de-escalate as well by holding Perry back,” Farrell continued, “Dave walked away to take his guitar off. Eric walked up to Perry, upstage, in the dark, behind Dan, put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times.”
As it stands, Jane’s Addiction are set to resume their ongoing North American tour in Toronto on September 18th. If they go ahead with the scheduled dates in their calendar, the group will play over a dozen more shows before concluding the run at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on October 16th.
