Darren Aronofsky’s AI studio launches new animated series on the American Revolution
Darren Aronofsky‘s AI studio, Primordial Soup, has debuted an animated Revolutionary War series online.
The short-form series, produced in partnership with Google DeepMind, promises to post new episodes on Time’s YouTube channel throughout 2026.
On This Day … 1776 has come about, as, in July 2026, the US will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A large handful of media outlets, political figures, and companies will be celebrating the anniversary throughout the year.
Each episode of the AI project uses a combination of traditional filmmaking tools and AI to share snappy narrative stories about the Revolutionary War.
In a previous announcement, the companies stated that they aimed to “reframe the Revolution not as a foregone conclusion but as a fragile experiment shaped by those who fought for it.” The partnership itself was announced last May.
Importantly, the series does not use AI voice actors. Rather, voice actors are sanctioned by SAG-AFTRA. After the episodes are pieced together, Primordial Soup’s post-production team edits, mixes, and color grades the episodes.
Studio resident Ben Bitonti said in a statement, “This project is a glimpse at what thoughtful, creative, artist-led use of AI can look like – not replacing craft, but expanding what’s possible and allowing storytellers to go places they simply couldn’t before.”
Not all animated AI projects have been welcomed with open arms. At the end of 2025, Google was forced to remove AI Disney videos after receiving a cease-and-desist letter, which claimed that the tech giant was using material belonging to Disney and manipulating it with generative AI to “commercially exploit and distribute” infringing material.
In other Aronofsky news, it was announced recently that the Requiem for a Dream director’s next project will be a collaboration with author Gillian Flynn on an untitled erotic thriller.
Aronoskfy’s current list of projects also includes the A24 film, Breakthrough, with Dwayne Johnson attached to star, a reboot of Cujo for Netflix, and an Elon Musk biopic for A24.
