Darren Aronofsky set to direct Gillian Flynn-penned erotic thriller

Darren Aronofsky has plenty of projects in different stages of development, with a fourth just being announced: the director will team up with author Gillian Flynn on an untitled erotic thriller.

Though plot details are currently kept under wraps, we might suspect a biting take on the genre. Flynn wrote Steve McQueen’s Widows, as well as the adaptation of her own book, Gone Girl, for David Fincher.

Several of Flynn’s other works, such as Dark Places and Sharp Objects, have also been translated successfully to the screen. She is also on board to write Tim Burton’s highly anticipated reimagining of Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman at Warner Bros.

Despite Flynn’s collaborative streak, this new movie will mark the first time Flynn and Aronofsky have joined forces.

Additionally, the movie will come from 1.21, the company behind Austin Butler’s Elvis and Dave Franco and Alison Brie-led horror film Together, promising dark, modern undertones and thematic investigations.

Writing on Aronofsky’s latest picture, Caught Stealing, Far Out observed, “Caught Stealing represents a departure for the filmmaker, and it indicates a desire to show that he has other strings to his bow than traumatic, haunting dramas that hollow out audiences’ souls.”

In the picture, Austin Butler plays a New York City bartender, Hank Thompson, who finds himself caught in the middle of a criminal underworld thanks to the influence of his punk-rock neighbour, played by Matt Smith.

Aronoskfy’s current list of projects also includes the A24 film, Breakthrough, with Dwayne Johnson attached to star, a reboot of Cujo for Netflix, and an Elon Musk biopic for A24.

The director has spread himself across many genres, known originally for the horrifying tale of addiction in Requiem For A Dream, followed up by hits like Black Swan, Mother! and The Whale.
