Daniel Johnston special edition vinyl box set announced for Record Store Day

A special posthumous box set release is on the way to celebrate the work of lo-fi legend Daniel Johnston.

The late, great Daniel Johnston is your favourite musician’s favourite musician. A deeply emotional and creative man, his career was painfully marred by mental health issues and never saw Johnston reach the peaks of stardom he so rightly deserved. However, while chart-topping success may never have been on the cards, Johnston is without a doubt one of the most influential artists of his generation.

The singer sadly passed away last year and saw his family release a poignant statement, “Daniel was a singer, songwriter, an artist, and a friend to all,” they said. “Although he struggled with mental health issues for much of his adult life, Daniel triumphed over his illness through his prolific output of art and songs. He inspired countless fans, artists, and songwriters with his message that no matter how dark the day, ‘the sun shines down on me’ and ‘true love will find you in the end.’”

Now, in a bid to celebrate his extensive work, a brand new special edition vinyl box set has been announced for Record Store Day. The boxset marks the first posthumous release for Daniel Johnston, following his untimely passing from a suspected heart attack.

Entitled ‘The End Is Never Really Over’, the boxset will bring together vinyl copies of two much loved Daniel Johnston albums, 1990 and Artistic Vice. ‘1990’ was, logically, released in 1990 whilst ‘Artistic Vice’ followed it up a year later. The box set release marks the first time both of these records have been pressed on vinyl and issued back into circulation in 10 years.

500 copies of the special edition boxset will be available worldwide at participating Record Store Day locations on the rescheduled date of Saturday 29th August 2020. Alongside the rare vinyl copies, the box set will also include seven stickers of Daniel’s distinguished doodles, a further 16-page artbook of Daniel’s drawings, as well as a ‘Jeremiah the Frog’ pin — the much-loved character from the cover art of Daniel’s ‘Hi How Are You’ album — and expanding the collaboration between Daniel Johnston and FOLK Clothing, the boxset will also include an exclusive high-quality FOLK t-shirt with Daniel’s Captain America ‘End of the Show’ drawing.

Full details of participating record stores and other special releases available as part of this year’s event can be found at the official Record Store Day website.
