Critics Choice Awards 2023: The full list of winners
The Critics Choice Awards are an important leg of the race during the annual awards season. In many ways, it sets the tone for the culmination of the journey for many artists – the Oscars. The results of this year’s edition of the Critics Choice Awards have definitely shed some light on the frontrunners for the Academy Awards.
Once again, A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once emerged as one of the top winners. Michelle Yeoh’s latest project picked up the Best Picture Award, while Ke Huy Quan won the Best Supporting Actor Award and replicated his success at the Golden Globes this year.
Brendan Fraser, the most beloved actor in the world right now, won the Best Actor Award for his performance in The Whale. Fraser said: “The Whale is about love. It’s about redemption. It’s about finding the light in a dark place… I was in the wilderness, and I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs. But you found me and, like all the best directors, you merely just showed me where to go to get to where I needed to be.”
Cate Blanchett also picked up the Best Actress prize for TÁR, saying: “Best actress … I mean, it is extremely arbitrary considering how many extraordinary performances there have been by women, not only in this room… You don’t stand here unless … [a] director asks you to do something that you think is impossible, and you’re terrified to do.”
Angela Bassett, the Wakanda Forever star, continued her incredible awards run. During her acceptance speech, she said: “I’m proud of the work that we did with Black Panther and now with Wakanda Forever. We show the world that we could create and lead a billion-dollar box-office success. And my prayer is that that door remains open, and the sky’s the limit for other Black creators and storytellers around the world to join us.”
