Courtney Love reveals that Lana Del Rey housed her for a year rent-free: “A fantastic girl”

Courtney Love has showered Lana Del Rey with praise after revealing that she provided rent-free housing for her for an entire year.

Speaking with old friend and Smashing Pumpkins star, Billy Corgan, on his podcast The Magnificent Others, the Hole singer opened up about her friendship with Del Rey, which began when the ‘Summertime Sadness’ singer invited Love to be part of her Endless Summer Tour in 2015.

Their friendship has persisted. In 2022, Love publicly compared Del Rey to her late husband, Kurt Cobain, deeming them both “The only two true musical geniuses I’ve ever known. And by that I mean they can Spielberg anything.”

Now, Love has added a new chapter to the book of their friendship, sharing with Corgan that Del Rey has recently come to her rescue in a way that no one else has in the industry.

“I’m friendly with Lana Del Rey, in fact, I would call us really good friends, and she put me in her house in Malibu for a year rent-free, like what the hell?” Love shared, still astonished, though she didn’t disclose exactly when the housing situation took place.

Love went on, “Also, she was really great at helping me get out of town because I needed to get out of the life. She’s got this upper-middle-class thing as well, so she could play these guys that were really harming my life.”

She later called her “a fantastic girl and a real friend, she’s done things for me that nobody has ever done in our business, particularly another woman.”

Love has somewhat changed her tune in the last two years. In 2024, she criticised Del Rey’s new music, sharing at that time, “I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off,” Love told the Evening Standard, citing Del Rey’s cover of ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’, released in 2023.

Del Rey returned recently with the single ‘White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter’, which Far Out gave four stars, observing that the song is “a stage production, a ballet, either with classical orchestral details that touch on a whole different world of storytelling traditions.”
