Courtney Barnett, David Byrne, and more support new charitable mixtape
A selection of artists have teamed up to create a new compilation mix for Noise For Now, a nonprofit organisation that helps independent abortion providers across the United States. This time round, David Byrne, Faye Webster, Courtney Barnett, Devo and more are involved.
This is the second volume of the charity’s mixtape. The first one arrived in November, featuring tracks from Tegan and Sara, Wet Leg, Maya Hawke and Sleater-Kinney amongst others. Whether offering up previously unheard demos, live versions or covers, the artists all pledged their music to help raise money for the cause.
When fans purchase the album, the proceeds will go towards aiding grassroots organisations. The charity connects with artists and uses their notoriety and art to raise funds for vital services that are crucial in a world post the Supreme Court’s anti-abortion crackdown.
The release of this second mixtape, set to be shared on June 21st, marks the two-year anniversary of the Court’s reversal of Roe v Wade. The original 1973 case made access and the right to an abortion a protected right. In 2022, that was taken away. This means that the ability to have the procedure across America is difficult, or in some places totally impossible, as some states made abortion in any form at any point illegal.
“Reproductive health care services, including access to legal abortion, are under attack,” Noise For Now writes on their website.
Their statement continues: “By organizing benefit events and campaigns, Noise For Now provides opportunities for artists and entertainers to use their talent to raise money and send a clear message that Reproductive Rights are human rights.”
For this second mixtape, they’ve called in some big names to support the cause. The tracklist includes a collaboration between Talking Heads’ David Byrne and DEVO with their track ‘Empire’. Julia Jacklin shares a Catonia cover, while Faye Webster offered up a live version of ‘Thinking About You’. The War On Drugs also shared a live track with a version of ‘Victim’ from their 2021 album I Don’t Live Here Anymore.
The digital album costs $10.99 and the physical release vinyl will be $29.95. In both cases, fans can donate however much they like above this number, inviting people to give as much as they can to the vital cause.
