Country singer sued after throwing beer can into the crowd

The country music singer Jameson Rodgers is being sued over an incident in 2022, in which he allegedly threw a full can of beer at a fan from the stage.

According to the court documents acquired by People, Rodgers is being sued by plaintiff Samantha Haws. She claims that she was hit by the unopened beer can after the singer threw it from the stage while performing at the Barefoot Country Music Festival in Wildwood, New Jersey.

On the court documents, Sony Music, Southern Entertainment and Molson Coors are also listed as defendants.

The case states that Rodgers caused serious injury to Haws. The plaintiff noted in her original lawsuit that the can of beer, which was allegedly thrown by Rodgers, struck her “violently and without warning in the head and facial area,” according to Billboard. This incident caused “severe, painful and permanent bodily injuries.”

The lawsuit was initially filed on May 21st, 2024. It has experienced new life, when an opinion from the appellate division, shared on October 22nd, noted that Sony Music, Rodgers’ label, must remain involved in the case. This comes after Sony Music had attempted to remove itself from the lawsuit.

To do this, Sony Music was using a claim that the company does not have jurisdiction over what happens at the festivals that their artists participate in. Additionally, it stressed that they do not operate in New Jersey. However, now, they must remain involved, as it may be argued that Rodgers acted as an “agent” of his label in this incident.

There have been a handful of similar lawsuits in recent history. For example, 50 Cent was sued in 2024 over an incident in which he threw a microphone off the stage in frustration. The equipment then allegedly hit a stagehand. Cardi B was also the centre of a similar lawsuit after throwing her mic at a fan who threw their drink at the singer in Las Vegas.
