Country singer Conner Smith involved in fatal car accident as elderly woman killed
Country singer Conner Smith is cooperating with police after a 77-year-old woman was killed in a fatal car accident over the weekend following a collision with his vehicle.
Smith was reportedly driving a Chevrolet Silverado truck on June 8th at 7:30pm local time in Nashville on 3rd Avenue North when Dorothy Dobbins crossed the road at a marked crosswalk and was fatally hit by his pickup.
Following the collision, Dobbins was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.
The police statement reads (via The Independent): “The preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian.” Their message continues: “He showed no signs of impairment.”
In a statement shared with People, Smith’s lawyer stated he was “involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life”.
The singer’s lawyer continued: “His heart goes out to Ms Dobbins’s family during this incredibly difficult time. Mr Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.”
Smith had been in Nashville to perform at the CMA Fest on June 7th, which is one of the biggest events in the country music calendar. Artists on the line-up include Luke Bryan, who Smith had also previously supported on tour.
Last year, he released his debut album, Smoky Mountains, which charted at 42 on the US Country chart. He also boasts more than 1.5 million unique monthly listeners on Spotify.
According to Smith’s website, his next performance is scheduled to take place on June 14th in Fort Myers, Florida, and he remains set to appear at a number of festivals across the summer in America.
Smith is yet to comment directly on the fatal accident.
